kayak fishing is harder but it has good sides to it. you can creep up on fish alot easyier than in a boat as you dont have a noisy engine in the water. ive never tried it tho....it would be good on a river tho but this is sea fishing !
if i where you i would buy a second hand one and see if you enjoy it if you do upgrade to a better one. but thats just me.

It's not as easy as it looks! Go to a kayak dealer, http://www.bournemouthcanoes.co.uk/
Talk to them, try some out, it's become so popular recently, which has resulted in only dodgy old yaks being sold secondhand at not much less than decent new ones. The Malibu Mini X is a highly rated low cost (approx £330) but depends on your height, weight etc. Try a few out, a decent dealer will encourage this!
Next...don't think of this as an easy way to reach fish, learn to use the yak a few times first. Fishing from a bobbing turning shower tray in the sea ain't that easy!
Second, think A LOT about wind, tides, saftey etc. Get a PFD (life jacket), get a paddle leash to make sure the yak and your paddle remain together, otherwise the old proverb about a creek and paddle will seem rather obvious. Talk to your local coastguard, harbour master etc to see if there are any nasty or unpredictable tidal currents in your area. You can paddle about 4 to 6 knots tops, some tides are faster than this!
Never go out if it's more than a foot or so swell unless you know what your doing!
Try to contact some experienced fishing kayakers in your area and go out in a group to gain some experience and confidence.
Check out www.kayakfishing.co.uk for their forum. It's for kayakers who fish. Not BCU, not tourers, just people like us who want to fish from a kayak. Some very good advice on this forum.
I won't pretent I'm experienced at this, but so far I have learnt that you'll have to learn to kayak safely before you can fish!
The choice of rod etc is quite tricky. You'll need a rod long enough to reach around the yak and get the line away fom you when you're paddling (trolling) and to steer fish around the yak while reeling the buggers in. Light gear is probably best, you won't be able to pull out of snags on a 50lb line! you'll pull yourself in!
Good luck! |
