Spoke to my local tackle shops last week as I was looking at getting a boat rod.

He advised me to go for an uptide (up to 10oz) as they're more successful around this way but also have the advantage you can still downtide with them if the boat is full.

He also said I'd be able to use it as a short range shore/rock rod and from piers. Obviously not as good as designated rods but should be able to get away with it.

Is this correct? Hope it is as I can only afford one set up at the moment and this sounds perfect for my needs.

Your tackele dealer seems to know his stuff, as well as the obvious advantages it also lets you hold your rod out on a boat a bit further than those who use conventional boat rods and helps to avoid tangles from those fishing uptide of you, Cheers keith

I gree that uptiders are better than shorter rods . You can work feathers and lures better , use longer traces for baits and its sometimes better to put the rod down to fish, a longer rod will keep you clear of the side of the boat as it will when drifting and the line is going under the hull.
Lots of plus points the only minus one is it takes up more room in the car.

Tony's Tackle in Caerphilly. Really nice bloke who is obviously a fishing nut. I told him i wouldn't be buying for a while and may get it mail order as most of his stuff is out of my price range. He was still happy to offer advice and I was in there for an hour nattering. May see if my budget can stretch a bit further and support local even if it does mean I spend slightly more than I would elsewhere.

Bought some line and a load of leads and he knocked a couple of quid off too. Can't beat good service in my book.

Had an Abu uptider for years rated up to 8 ozs. Actually has not been out in the boat that often, it has been used for shorefishing more than in the boat and is great for spinning/mackereling because you can keep casting it without getting too knackered. I can actually cast it about 80 yds on a good day and it is perefect for close in fishing on calm nights. I would still use the beach casters when there is a bit of surf though because it ain't quite long enough to lift yer line above the surf.
