please can anyone tell me what is the difference between say 60lb main line and 60lb shock leader other than (so called proper) shock leader being three times the price and on a smaller spool
basicly why cant you use 60lb maine line as a shock leader or is there a real reason why you shouldent
ceers steve

i have no idea steve big grin generally i use suffix zippy which doubles as rig body and shock leader, cant see why you would want to use 60lb main though(unless its braid or super fine mono),i think they used to do that many years ago, before the whole shockleader to lighter main was used,i'd ask rabbi2 he was born in 1066

good question though, unless it comes under the "foola angler" subsection,or its a higher spec line,im only guessing now, greater abrasion resistance as its closer to the sea bed (sand, stones etc) plus abit of stretch to it to absorb the shock of a cast with the more powerful rods they produce nowadays.

Hi, I use 80lb braid on my F/S reels, so no need for a shockleader. The only thing i need 60lb line for is my traces, which have to be 10lb B/S to each ounce of weight, cos im always using 5/6oz weights. Unless your using a boat rod, (shark fishing) 60lb line isnt required, most peeps use around 15/20lb mainline, with a 60lb shockleader. While im at it, never use braid on a multiplier, unless its a boat reel. Cheers..Mick

I use 60lb mainline as shock leader that I bought in a 2kilogramme spool and it will last me my lifetime. I personally think that there is no difference between the two but will more than likely be corrected.
Cheers

If Your question is "could you use 60lb mainline as a shockleader" as it is cheaper than buying 60lb shockleader , then my answer is , I dont see why not. I bought a roll of line that could be used as mainline , handline or washing line , but I use it as shockleader. The only reason I dont use it as mainline is because I'd only get 100 yards of it onto my reel . hence 15-18 lb mainline and 60-80lb shockleader.

tight lines big grin

thanks for the reples lads and no i dont use 60lb main i just ment you can buy a large spool of it for peanuts compaired to so called proper shockleader so getting more leaders for your money and will last a lot longer than one of those 50mt spools of the proper stuff i think it as andy says it foola angerler type thing
cheers steve
