I just returned from one week in Gambia West Africa fishing in a kayak for the first time. It was fantastic the weather, the people, and especially the fishing.

We caught snapper, barracuda, ray, grouper, captainfish and a lot more fishing rivers, sea, mangroves.

If anyone wants a great holiday that won't cost a fortune try Gambia.

thanks dan, does sound good. could you tell us ...

did you organise your trip with these folks at wild gambia ?
http://www.wildgambia.com/21.html

i'm dreaming of going gambia and taking my own 'advanced elements' inflatable kayak.

i've been gambia before (true, it's great crack and no just the 'kissa') and experience kayaking in hebridean atlantic but never paddled in african atlantic.

on the coast how did you find the tides, swell and surf ? i remember the surf as being big and the rips off the beaches (when swimming) sometimes ferocious.

in the mangroves was it easy enough to find routes through to the pools? I did dugout trips in casamance and remember the mangroves as an unmapped maze. don't think i could have done it without a dugout 'driver-guide'.

did you speak to anyone about fishing the freshwater river gambia for tigerfish ?

I would prefer to do it by myself, foolhardy git that i am, but might consider a guide for a day or two till i get an idea of the water.

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated

cheers

Sounds like you had an excellent trip and adventure!

Wild Ghambia looks interesting and I've been contemplating a trip without the family to get away for a few days. This would definitely be an option. There's a kayak guide in Mauritius I've contacted but the Ghambia looks more like a true adventure.
