Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and new to SF. I used to be a Coarse Angler, member of a club and Match Fishing. That was over 20 years ago now. I have just moved to Hastings in S.E. Sussex and want to start SF from the beach.

I can't do Boat Fishing after having Labyrinthitis about 6 years ago and I suffer with motion sickness quite badly as I found out on a wreck fishing trip last year and was sea sick for 8 hours for teh first time in my life.

I am hoping to do some beachcasting, fish for Bass and spin for mackeral.

I am looking to spend up to 40- 50 on a reel and have been considering buying

Shakespeare
SALT FDX 070 Reel for Beechcasting or a SALT 070 which is more expensive

ABU
I am also considering buying an ABU Cardinal SWi series for Bass and Mackeral spinning etc

Can anyone give me advice on these reels or alternatives to consider and what rod they would work well with to consider buying as well

Thanks for your help and advice

Lee

I've got the Shakespeare Salt Surf XDS which I find OK, but nothing to shout about

Seems to have all the desirable features although a trifle large. I just bought a Jarvis Walker (Aussie firm) Aurora 6500 for quite a bit less - looks very similar and although a smaller reel, still holds 330 yds of line (when will you need more?).
For a spinning reel you need a small lightweight job which holds around 120 yds of line or so I think the Abu Cardinal SW's are a bit much so how about a Fladen Maxximus DX Spinning Reel which looks excellent value to me.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.

How much would it cost to buy a decent FS reel?

All my Course Fishing reels are Daiwa, Mitchhell and Shimano which were expensive at the time.

Size should be about the spool diameter in my opinion (an important matter when it comes to casting in my experience) but in actual fact they seem to vary and I don't understand why - maybe RW can explain. Lets just say that 4000/5000 reels generally seem to hold around 150 yds of 10lb line.
I note his remark about spool capacity but if one uses braid for lure casting as I do and a few others these days too, you can get an awful lot of line on a small lightweight reel.
