Hi All
Can anybody give me any pointers on surf fishing at Benone. I have done quite a bit of fresh water fishing in my time but not much sea fishing. I have just bought a caravan at bebone and it's only 50 yards from the beach so i recon i might start beach casting. All Advice welcome.
Welcome to the forum mate. All I can suggest is that you start off with a scratching rig and take it from there. Something like a running ledger with 2 hooks above the weight, I mysel;f would use size 1s aberdeen for the bottom hook with beads as an atractor and size 1/0s for the 2 hooks above the weight. Sorry I cant be of any more help. Keith
Hi Gareth
I been having a look at a few sites and asking about the beach you want to fish and the result is some people love it ( not many ) and more hate it,( loads )
Some say the magilligan side fish’s best, another said at the entrance to the beach go left as far as the bend and fish there for turbot / flounder and bass,
I have never fished this beach but if I had to fish it I would use 2 rods one rod rigged as Keith has said and another rigged with a pulley Pennel 3/0 hooks using lug & crab or lug & squid in the hope a bass might pay a visit,
I hear the water is clean so I would use fluorocarbon hook lengths, if you have no luck on the daytime go back on a night when high water meets darkness for the Bass,
Let us know how you get on,
Ps, I been told to bring a good book with me if I was going to fish this mark,
Gareth, I started out sea fishing around this area about 5 years ago. Get yourself a cheapo beach caster, a trip to the Great Outdoors in Coleraine or one of the tackle shops in Portrush will supply you with this.
Grab a few bags of rag worm and a rod rest and a simple 2 hook rig ie one up, one down. Some rough water there, with a good sandy bottom, try and hit it a couple of hours before and after high tide seems to work best.
For flatties stick on a few beads on your rig, for bass I generally use a pulley rig with bait shield using a mixture of mackerel and rag. You can pick up bait in Coleraine and Portrush quite easily, failing that hit the fish counter at ASDA in Coleraine.
You will meet a fair few locals who will offer advice. To be honest anyone I spoke to loves this spot and would swear by it, I do the most of my fishing from Benone or Downhill cause its close to where I live in Co. Tyrone.
