i need an anchor for my yak,but i have no idea what to do with it.ive read that you must have 3 times the depth of line out with the anchor, but what do you tie the anchor line to? what happens if it gets stuck in rocks? are there any precautions i can take to free the anchor if it gets stuck?
cheers in advance

You must also have a good length of heavy chain so that the anchor lies flat to the sea bed

I would have thought that a small homemade grapnel made with softish wire plus a trip (the trip allows the grapnel to pull out backwards if snagged) and 2nd weak link would be better as it needs to be expendable, you don`t want to end up in the water trying to get it back. You could make a small concrete mushroom on a weak link for soft ground . The question is how many pounds pull can you safely get while sitting on a yak as what i`ve said applies to small dingies and the kayackers might think different......sniggle

Hello hoops, you just tie the anchor rope to the back end of the grapple and bring it past the eye where you would normally tie it . A couple of turns of light line tied through the eye and around the main rope will hold till you until the anchor snags, then you pull from an angle the light line breaks and the grapple SHOULD pull out backwards. If you snag a rope or cable this won`t work as the grapple will swivel round and you need a sideways pull to make the light line trip break...hope this makes sense......sniggle

hi, i bought a couple of anchors from ebay for the kayak, they are folding for storage ,they weigh 1.5lb and will hold you in all but the very strongest currents. they are also cheap 12.50 for both inc p+p. you will need to have the anchor coming off either the front or back of the kayak not from the middle otherwise you will end up in the water. i have fitted a trolley system to mine so that you can do this from the seated postion. look on the anglers afloat website for more info. hope this helps

Ok me and my big gob again. Fasten the chain to the eye at the bottom of the anchor using a snap link or something similar, then run the chain along the length of the anchor until you come to the top eye, then fasten the chain to this top eye using a cable tie. when the anchor gets snagged the cable tie breaks and you can then pull the anchor up backwards so the the grapnels are not stopping you. Hope this helps keith |

I use an old onion sack and a suitable pebble from the waters edge, this saves carrying rusty, heavey anchors around.
