Anyone tried these, seems like a lot of reel for the money?

I have an Okuma Trio 40S (high speed) which I use for plugging and I find it super smooth, reliable & becomes one with you during hours of endless casting/retreives. Rinsed after every trip, it's as good as new (and I don't think it's really a saltwater reel). I believe this particular model is of better than average build - it just fels right to me.

Not familiar with Okuma at all, this is my first, but I think the upper end of their model range will prove to be good equipment, with the usual offerings of "budget" models that all manufacturers have.

Unfortunately, most things are made in China in order for manufacturers to appeal to consumers needs for cheaper goods - overall quality will always suffer - my local tackle shop sees the vast majority of todays reels as "disposable", designed to last for a single season. Spares can also be hard to come by, hence influencing the decison to throw away and buy new each season.

I bought a cheap Chinese "California" fixed spool in May, it hasn't seen much use but last trip out I had trouble with the bail arm closing during the cast. All happened rather sedately, no crack off's or major drama, but I wasn't going for any huge distances, just gentle lobs. It happened 3 or 4 times and became "embarrasing". Bail arm mechanism & return spring is made of cheese and has become very weak & sloppy - I suspect it will snap next time I use it. Reel cost 22 delivered New (eBay) - it won't last a season, probably been used no more than 4/5 sessions and the chance of getting parts......undoubtedley ZERO. Even if I could they probaly die just as quickly.

I've gone through a phase of buying cheap - great at the time as the savings mount up and allow you to buy more terminal tackle or do other things completely, but now I'm reverting back to quality at much higher prices - it feels better in the hand, works better, last longer, is refurbishable and just makes the whole fishing experience more enjoyable. In addition, I know I can get every part I need from official UK service centres within a few days if I need something (although currently, trying to source a particular Abu part seem to be the exception - keep on being told they're on their way from sweden......seems more like a very slow boat from China?)

Don't think this really answers your question on the specific model you asked about, but hope this provides you with some "outside the box" considerations. I'm now looking for a "Quality" fixed spool to replace my "New" Chinese fixed spool......and will be posting here for opinions
