Shakespeare have always made fairly decent boat rods without being to dear. Mine is an Ugly Sapphire around 7 ft and is now 10 years old with no problems rated at 20lb. Don't get anything much longer than that, there is no point and they only get in the way on a small boat. I combine it with a Shimano TLD15 which I was given but they are a bit expensive so you may want to get something like an Okuma Classic, there are some on ebay for around 30.

Depends on your budget, At the top end of the market is the Fladen solid carbon boat rods in various classes at 100 each whilst at the other end of the market is the shakespeare 20 to 30lb rod. As for the reel Abu 7000 or 7000i.

Any fair sized multiplier will suffice. Must point out that that the Fladens will not take a really big multiplier as it would be out of balance but is well balanced with the abu reels mentioned.

The multi tipped rods are very handy especially when you need good bite indication for flatties and whiting thats where the 12lb tip comes in really handy the 20 and 30 tips are ok for general boat fishing and will cope with cod conger and skate.
