Shakespeare Salt FDX reels

These were purchased as part of a combo deal.

Good looking reels which come with a spare aluminium spool and look to be very well made.Once loaded up they felt extremely smooth and looked forward to using them with my new rods.

The bail arm is very stable in the cast and the retrieve is good. The drag is also easy to engage and adjust being positive in use.The power handle is also comfy to hold.

However there are a few niggles to bear in mind.

Line twist is HORRENDOUS (and its not my loading,I have been loading reels for years and have the technique down to a tee) and when packing up the line coils off the spool easily if care is not taken. This leads me on to another complaint regarding the line clip - this is not peculiar to Shakespeare, but why oh why do large beach reels such as this have line clips you'd struggle to get 15lb line under, let alone a shockleader.Lastly, why bother with a folding handle that can't be tightened off when folded ?

All in all, look to be good workhorses if you can overcome the line twist problem. Not sure they would have been my first choice if there was a choice with the combo deal, but theres a lot worse out there.

I have a salt 060 fdx. After three months of light clean beach work the bail arm broke whilst retrieving my line with a 5oz lead. I have just received a replacement without any quibbles. I have also noticed some line twist with the reel. Apart from that it has a very smooth operation and casts well. Personally I wouldn't buy another.
