Squid Bait ?

Hey all have just finally decided to look at my squid that was donated a few months back,

have I hooked these up right ?

also in one of them squidies was a prawn which I decided to hook on aswell

heres a few pics any help be appreciated

are the squid verry small, or are they on big hooks,, just out of interest

the squid are about 8 inches at a rough guess hooks are size 3/0, the bottom pic is its head with a shrimp that I found in its inside's hooked on too.

Top pic is the body of the squid its been cut down a bit as was engulfing the hook hence why might look abit smaller.

Am no expert on squids hence why am asking.

Hi, the biggest problem with large baits, is that they can cover the hook. When you cast out a distance, they hit the water, and the pressure of the water pushes the bait down the hook, covering it. When i use large baits i use a pennel, (two hooks to hold the bait in place) and firm the bait using bait elastic, making it harder for the bait to bend round the hook. Cheers..Mick

to be honest I aint been fishing that long well about 8 months and never used squid, so not too sure what squid is good for here in northeast

do different presentations on the hook attract different species as up to know always used mussel or prawn as they seem to out fish rag plus a heck of a lot cheaper

You beat me to it manic.....was just going to mention bait presentation to benbo and the use of a pennel hook or bait elastic is something to consider when baiting up with larger baits........general forum or sea fishing baits forum....

yeah both these 2 pics and elasticated on at the top and the bottom, I elasticated the squid on the top pic at the top just under its eyes, and also elasticated the shrimp that was in the squids guts to try and stop it fouling the hook I have got a few pennel rigs but been using single hook or 2 hook flappers as attaching the hooks using a genie clip so I can pre load the hooks and freeze and just whip out when fishing to same a bit of time when am going for that 12 lb monster

i agree with the pennel rig but i find after a while on the hook the squid gets tough and trying to remove it with baiting lakky is a bleedin nightmare
baiting lacky is great stuff but a pain in the bum to remove

ooppss didnt see the fishing baits section feel free to move it into there I won't be offended much lol,

and yeah the pics might not show the lacky but they are both elasticated around the top and bottom to hold the squid in place and hopefully stop it fouling the hook

When using the bait elastic i would suggest binding the squid from top to bottom to create a sausage type shape on the hook.
The way you are doing it at top and bottom of bait it may still slip down the hook as in your pic and just be a blob of bait.
Slide the squid over the eye of the hook and when binding the eye can help keep the bait in place.

p.s wasnt having a pop at you about posting in the wrong forum mate its just a few posts have been getting moved around a bit.

nah thats cool didnt see the baits section he he he, and feel free to have a pop anytime he he he he joking,

doesn't it affect the presentation of the bait making it more of a sausage shape as trying to make them look as natural as poss or doesn't that really matter sorry never used squid before so sound like a proper noob lol,

I am no expert mate but what i do (and i think maybe most others) is remove the main body from the squid....pull out the clear plastic looking backbone.
I then cut this in half length ways (keep whole if using a size 5/0 or bigger) and once you have the 2 halfs take one and starting at the top end i stitch the hook in and out down the length of the bait and then through the end with the hook point on show.
Then bind with elastic and you can use 3 or 4 of the tentacles to tip of the bait to give more fluttering movement in the water and hopefully enticing fish at the same time.
Hope you can get what i mean as i may not be explaining myself very well.

Hi, now you point out the lacky, i can see it, but would suggest you lacky a good half inch or more. If you firm up the first 3/4s of an inch or so, it makes it harder to push it round the bend of the hook. Oh you asked about what fish you can catch, well ive caught everything from a greedy little gurnard, to codling, but obviously you have to keep the bait small enough, (or big enough) for the fish you expect to catch. just one more query is the head of the squid any good aswell or is it the body that generally is the better option to use as bait.
